About the Choir

A friendly well established four-part SATB choir (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass) with up to 30 members singing in Penarth for 40+ years.

Tom Coltman, our Musical Director and Inspiration, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the choir. He offers a clear, energetic musical direction for Cavatina Singers and is supported by our talented new Accompanist, Dora Seaton from the RWCMD.

Throughout the year the choir performs a number of  concerts, with music drawn from a range of traditional and contemporary composers, as well as a few popular songs.

An Autumn concert in November has included charity events and school choir collaborations with music from Byrd to Broadway, an astronomy theme, a Jazz theme, and last November, a concert in the Turner Gallery, 'Transformations - Moments and Seasons of Change', with pieces by Tallis,  Morley, Faure, Coleridge Taylor, Copland, and others

Cavatina celebrate Christmas at a number of venues across Penarth with carols from the  100 Carols  for Choirs along with more contemporary seasonal music with pieces by Lauridsen, Gjeilo and local composers Lawson and Heneghan.

Spring brings a Come and Sing event or a similar collaborative experience with other singers and musicians. Previous works have included: Handel's Coronation Anthems, Faure's Requiem,  songs by Rutter, Chilcott's Little Jazz Mass, Veitch's Jazz Missa Brevis, Schubert's Mass in G, Vivaldi's Gloria and much more. This year's concert on the 24th March is titled 'Follow the Heron' (details above) and on the 27th April we will be joining two other Penarth choirs in concert to celebrate 200 years of the RNLI  - 'Sing to Save Lives'.  Also, on the 23rd June a 'Come and Join Us' evensong event is planned  in collaboration with our friends at  Penarth Methodist Church, a first for Cavatina Singers.

Our Summer 'Cream Tea'  concert is often themed with a selection of solo items  performed by guests from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.  A French theme,  a Welsh theme,  a Summer theme and Jazz theme are just a taster. A popular event with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for all to enjoy. This year we celebrate 40+ years with a belated birthday bash also at Penarth Methodist Church on Sunday 14th July 2024

If you are thinking about joining us, some musical experience would be an advantage, although it is not essential. As a member of the choir you will have access to support material and a welcoming group of people who simply enjoy singing.

Cavatina Singers rehearsals are every Tuesday from 7:30pm at Penarth Tabernacle Church with an annual subscription of £180, paid monthly at £15.00  per month.
